5 Ways to Prevent the Flu

  1. Get your flu shot.
The flu shot is the best way to prevent the spread of the seasonal flu. Nearly everyone 6 months and older should reach out to their health care provider by the end of October to schedule their flu shot.
  2. Stay home when you're sick.
Staying home can be difficult to do, but not only will it help prevent flu germs from spreading to others, it will allow you to rest and heal.
  3. Wash your hands.
Using soap and water to wash your hands will help prevent flu germs from spreading. You can also use hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable.
  4. Sneeze into your elbow.
Germs can travel far through the air after we sneeze, but sneezing into your elbow helps stop them from spreading.
  5. Drink lots of fluids and stay active.
Taking care of your overall health may help your body be better prepared to fight the flu.

Unfortunately, once you have the flu virus, you will have it from 7 to 10 days. If you do get sick, the best way to treat yourself is with plenty of rest and hydration. If you think you might have the flu or are concerned about flu symptoms, reach out to your health care provider for help.
