Kiwanis drawing to fund local scholarships

Mr. Olin Sansbury Jr. repaid a debt twice over this spring as he sent $1,000 to the Darlington Kiwanis Club for its scholarship program. He had received the assistance in the form of a loan years ago, and, after a successful career that Kiwanis helped him start, he paid it forward.

That's the kind of stories behind each of the David A. Cohen Scholarships given to Darlington High School Key Club members each spring. The scholarships are based on more than grades; community service and character are part of the criteria.

"The Kiwanis mission is to improve the world one child at a time," said Club President Charles Bailey. "These scholarships can change the trajectory of these kids' lives and make it easier for them to become productive members of our community."

The Club previously held an annual oyster roast to fund the scholarships, but with the skyrocketing supply costs the Board of Directors went a different route this year.

This year, the Club will hold a drawing for a custom, pull-behind grill fabricated by Wiggins Metal Works. Second prize will be a custom oyster roaster. Both would be great gifts for the men in your life and the drawing will be just in time for Father's Day.

Tickets for the drawing are $5 and can be purchased from any Kiwanis member. The drawing will be held during the June 16th meeting as the Club celebrates its most recent scholarship recipient and Flag Day. You need not be present to win.

"A $5 donation gives you a chance to win a fabulous prize and gives these kids a chance at a better life," said Bailey.
